The Bartimaeus Internship

Bartimaeus Cooperative Ministries offers 1-2 month internship opportunities for young adults (one person or a committed couple, ages 23-31). This internship focuses on learning about and working in the radical discipleship movement for faith and justice. Each internship is discerned and shaped individually, with dates negotiable, but generally follows one of two models:

A. BCM only: 4-6 weeks Five days a week the intern(s) help with BCM administrative, communications, hospitality and garden tasks (specific project assignments depend upon intern's skillset. One day a week is spent in guided study in scripture and theology, movement history and/or social analysis. One day a week is off. The BCM internship involves residency at Casa Anna Schulz in Oak View, CA in a one-room backyard cabin (right). Oak View is a small, semi-rural, blue-collar town, 10 minutes’ drive away from the cities of Ventura and Ojai and an hour and a half north of Los Angeles.

B. Split Internship: 4-8 weeks, divided between BCM and one of the following “sister” organizations (arranged by mutual agreement):

  • The Beloved Community Center: works on a wide variety of racial and economic justice issues in Greensboro, NC;
  • Spiritus Christi Church: an inclusive catholic community with a variety of compassionate and justice ministries in Rochester, NY;
  • Los Angeles Catholic Worker: operates a house of hospitality, a soup kitchen and a variety of public witnesses in downtown Los Angeles, CA.
  • The Abundant Table Farm Project: a faith based organic farming internship with whom BCM works closely, located 40 min. south of Oak View. This collaboration would be as negotiated rather than chronologically, with intern(s) lodging the whole time at Casa Anna Schulz.

Location and timing of the split internship is by negotiation with both sites and intern.

Terms: BCM trades work in exchange for study, mentoring, room, and board. There is no stipend. Interns must cover their travel expenses to and from Oak View (and the second site in the split program).
